RAKESH SHAH

COO Co-Founder Engineering Manager

I lead software teams, and I’m a co-founder and COO. At CodeValid I set product and technical direction for an AI-native validation platform, and I run operations, customers, and company execution. At Sea-Bird Scientific I lead modernization, testing, and AI tooling — turning messy systems into software that teams can actually ship.

OPERATING SYSTEM

how I work as a COO, founder, and manager

fn lead_engineering()

Engineering manager

I set direction, grow engineers, and keep delivery honest. Pairing, reviews, CI/CD, and mentoring are part of the job — not extras. I have led developer teams from intern programs through production systems used by real operators.

fn run_company()

COO / co-founder

At CodeValid I run the company alongside the product: operations, customer conversations, go-to-market, and the day-to-day of turning a thesis into something that ships. I still write, still ship, still talk to users.

fn modernize_systems()

Platform & modernization

I like hard, inherited codebases. Migrate the stack, consolidate the one-off tools, put tests around the workflows, and leave the team with something they can extend. That is most of real engineering leadership.

fn apply_ai()

AI for engineering orgs

Agents, MCP servers, spec-driven validation, and knowledge capture — used as levers for quality and speed, not demos. I care about whether the system is testable, traceable, and usable by the people on call.

COMMIT LOG

roles, teams, and systems shipped

Jul 2025 — now

COO & Co-Founder

CodeValid · Ames, IA
  • Building CodeValid to make software development faster, easier, and more reliable — an AI-native platform that continuously verifies APIs, web applications, and AI agents against evolving business requirements.
  • As COO, I run operations, customer discovery, go-to-market, and company execution — not just the product roadmap.
  • Leading product vision and strategy, and platform design to improve code quality and help teams catch issues earlier.
  • Developing spec-driven testing, requirement traceability, automated API validation, functional test generation, regression analysis, and agent testing.
Jul 2025 — now

Senior Software Engineer Lead

Sea-Bird Scientific
  • Maintain and enhance Sea-Bird applications while migrating legacy tools to modern stacks, and consolidating small utilities into unified, maintainable modules.
  • Evaluate and integrate ML/LLM capabilities into existing Sea-Bird workflows, including K2 processing.
  • Develop automated testing, regression testing, and validation for software and instrument workflows.
  • Diagnose complex software, calibration, data-processing, and integration issues, and work with engineering, support, and product teams to turn instrument requirements into software.
  • Build internal tooling that improves engineering productivity, and explore agents for ticket routing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Develop a Sea-Bird MCP server and internal assistant that can interact with tools, documentation, and workflows — using AI to make legacy code and domain knowledge more accessible.
Mar 2025 — Jul 2025

Staff Software Engineer

Kingland · Ames, IA
May 2018 — Mar 2025

Lead Software Engineer

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach · Ames, IA
  • Led a team of three developers to design and build the Food System web application for practitioners and educators using React and Node.js.
  • Project Lead for Data Science for Public Good (DSPG), including 2023’s “Local Food Systems & AI” and 2022’s “AgMRC Commodity Reports.”
  • Mentored DSPG teams and interns through pair programming, developer community events, and mod sessions.
  • Built reporting tools for Data for Decision Makers, Retail Trade, and IGFI using PHP, and a housing readiness assessment project with Python and AI models for housing quality, affordability, and access.
  • Replaced obsolete production workflows with CI/CD pipelines, improving usability and delivering projects weeks earlier.
  • Collaborated on the Indicators web application to consolidate program offerings for local decision-makers.
May 2017 — May 2018

Software Development Intern

Siemens PLM Software · Ames, IA
  • Created multiuser interaction in the immersive environment inside Teamcenter Visualization.
  • Improved teleportation and menu interaction in VR using OpenGL.
  • Integrated Oculus Rift and HTC Vive with an in-house graphics engine to render 3D models, and benchmarked rendering performance against competing products.

NOTES

ideas I keep coming back to

AI agents are not APIs

An API test asks whether an input produced the expected output. An agent test has to ask whether it chose the right tools, took a sensible path, and reached the right outcome.

Validation as a platform

Quality does not scale as a checklist. Continuously verifying APIs, web apps, and agents against evolving requirements is an engineering system — the same way CI became one.

Founder-led engineering

Lessons from building CodeValid: talk to customers, keep the spec close to the tests, and help teams ship AI-generated software without pretending it is already correct.
